Psalms 112
Reading Time: Less than one minute Listen
Praise ye the Lord. Blessed is the man that feareth the Lord, that delighteth greatly in his commandments.
2 His seed shall be mighty upon earth: the generation of the upright shall be blessed.
3 Wealth and riches shall be in his house: and his righteousness endureth for ever.
4 Unto the upright there ariseth light in the darkness: he is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous.
5 A good man sheweth favour, and lendeth: he will guide his affairs with discretion.
6 Surely he shall not be moved for ever: the righteous shall be in everlasting remembrance.
7 He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the Lord.
8 His heart is established, he shall not be afraid, until he see his desire upon his enemies.
9 He hath dispersed, he hath given to the poor; his righteousness endureth for ever; his horn shall be exalted with honour.
10 The wicked shall see it, and be grieved; he shall gnash with his teeth, and melt away: the desire of the wicked shall perish.

Psalm 112:1-10
The Righteous Will Never Be Moved
1 Praise the Lord!
Blessed is the man who fears the Lord,
who greatly delights in his commandments!
2His offspring will be mighty in the land;
the generation of the upright will be blessed.
3Wealth and riches are in his house,
and his righteousness endures forever.
4Light dawns in the darkness for the upright;
he is gracious, merciful, and righteous.
5It is well with the man who deals generously and lends;
who conducts his affairs with justice.
6For the righteous will never be moved;
he will be remembered forever.
7He is not afraid of bad news;
his heart is firm, trusting in the Lord.
8His heart is steady; he will not be afraid,
until he looks in triumph on his adversaries.
9He has distributed freely; he has given to the poor;
his righteousness endures forever;
his horn is exalted in honor.
10The wicked man sees it and is angry;
he gnashes his teeth and melts away;
the desire of the wicked will perish!

Psalm 112:1-10
Psalm 112
1Praise the Lord.
Blessed are those who fear the Lord,
who find great delight in his commands.
2Their children will be mighty in the land;
the generation of the upright will be blessed.
3Wealth and riches are in their houses,
and their righteousness endures forever.
4Even in darkness light dawns for the upright,
for those who are gracious and compassionate and righteous.
5Good will come to those who are generous and lend freely,
who conduct their affairs with justice.
6Surely the righteous will never be shaken;
they will be remembered forever.
7They will have no fear of bad news;
their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the Lord.
8Their hearts are secure, they will have no fear;
in the end they will look in triumph on their foes.
9They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor,
their righteousness endures forever;
their horn will be lifted high in honor.
10The wicked will see and be vexed,
they will gnash their teeth and waste away;
the longings of the wicked will come to nothing.

Commentary
This morning I heard from an old friend. “I can’t help with your project. I have totally rejected Adventism. I have become Catholic.” And that made me think about legacy and about Psalm 112.
As we age, we think more about what we will leave behind, and for whom. David did that too. And in his age of elder regret he wished for you and me a blessing: that we would leave behind “seed” that will be “mighty.”
Is that the legacy you are aiming for? If so, here are some insights for you from our Psalm: the light that rises in darkness (you know, Isaiah 58ish) is a character of being “gracious and full of compassion,” when surrounded by hardness and apathy.
And if you ask, “What is so mighty about compassion and gracious living?” then our Psalm answers directly: “Surely he shall not be moved forever…He shall not be afraid of evil tidings.”
Mighty children are the ones that will bear-up faithfully among the pressures abounding. They will be stable. And that stability doesn’t seem to derive just from the rituals of our Adventist living. It comes, rather, from a holiness that is gracious and that is full of compassion.
