Psalms 114
Reading Time: Less than one minute Listen
When Israel went out of Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of strange language;
2 Judah was his sanctuary, and Israel his dominion.
3 The sea saw it, and fled: Jordan was driven back.
4 The mountains skipped like rams, and the little hills like lambs.
5 What ailed thee, O thou sea, that thou fleddest? thou Jordan, that thou wast driven back?
6 Ye mountains, that ye skipped like rams; and ye little hills, like lambs?
7 Tremble, thou earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob;
8 Which turned the rock into a standing water, the flint into a fountain of waters.

Psalm 114:1-8
Tremble at the Presence of the Lord
1When Israel went out from Egypt,
the house of Jacob from a people of strange language,
2Judah became his sanctuary,
Israel his dominion.
3The sea looked and fled;
Jordan turned back.
4The mountains skipped like rams,
the hills like lambs.
5What ails you, O sea, that you flee?
O Jordan, that you turn back?
6O mountains, that you skip like rams?
O hills, like lambs?
7Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord,
at the presence of the God of Jacob,
8who turns the rock into a pool of water,
the flint into a spring of water.

Psalm 114:1-8
Psalm 114
1When Israel came out of Egypt,
Jacob from a people of foreign tongue,
2Judah became God’s sanctuary,
Israel his dominion.
3The sea looked and fled,
the Jordan turned back;
4the mountains leaped like rams,
the hills like lambs.
5Why was it, sea, that you fled?
Why, Jordan, did you turn back?
6Why, mountains, did you leap like rams,
you hills, like lambs?
7Tremble, earth, at the presence of the Lord,
at the presence of the God of Jacob,
8who turned the rock into a pool,
the hard rock into springs of water.

Commentary
The message of this Psalm is vital, and we must never permit ourselves to lose its meaning. More than a hundred years ago, we were told as a people, “We have nothing to fear for the future, except as we shall forget the way the Lord has led us, and His teaching in our past history” Life Sketches, p.196. Have you forgotten? Are you wavering in your faith and walk with God? Why not recount those moments: when God first got hold of you; when He first delivered you; when He revealed unto you His character, and you were never the same. Would you prayerfully recount that today? More so, will you prayerfully ask Him that revival, reformation, and transformation be your experience through His words, today?
If so, as in verse 8, the God who turned the rock into a pool of water, will provide streams of living water to his faithful children. When you continue to drink of this water, you will never thirst of what the “worldly well” has to offer, because this water will become in you a spring to refresh both you and those weary and thirsty around you.
