Commentary
Family histories can tell us quite a bit about who a person is. It can even have an influence morally on the person you become. If your parents give you lessons of self-denial, love for others, patience, and firm trust in God, we can expect these to bear fruit later in life and be passed down. The opposite is also true. One can be taught lessons of boasting, love for self, irritability, and trust in your own understanding.
The name Yissaskar means “to repay.” Later in the chapter, we see his descendants reach “thirty six thousand, for they had many wives and sons” (vs. 4). Elohim (the Godhead) clearly repaid. The name Asher implies “strong” and we see later in the chapter that they were “chosen ones, mighty brave men, chief leaders” (vs. 40). God clearly made them strong.
Names imply meaning. Who you are is characterized in your name. The Christ also had a name. This name was Yeshuah, which means, “He will deliver his people from their wrong-doings [sins]” (Matt 1:21). This mission will be fulfilled in us if we continue to “behold the Lamb, who takes away the wrong-doings [sins] of his people.”
