Psalms 130

Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O Lord.

²Lord, hear my voice: let thine ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications.

³If thou, Lord, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand?

⁴But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared.

⁵I wait for the Lord, my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope.

⁶My soul waiteth for the Lord more than they that watch for the morning: I say, more than they that watch for the morning.

⁷Let Israel hope in the Lord: for with the Lord there is mercy, and with him is plenteous redemption.

⁸And he shall redeem Israel from all his iniquities.

Commentary

What do you do when you go through hard times? The book of Psalms gives me a lot of encouragement. In the previous Psalm, someone was pretty upset with their enemies! What a change in tone in Psalm 130 as the author cries out to God for His mercy and help! I have found that looking up instead of to my circumstances really helps me to stay positive. God gives me hope as I learn to wait on Him. In this Psalm there are so many reasons to “hope in God, the Lord.” He forgives us, He gives us His promises, His love is unfailing and He redeems us!

As I write this, our whole world is hurting and in chaos because of COVID-19. Don’t give up hope. Look to the Lord and believe His promises. Here are a few that help me. 1 Peter 5:7: Cast your cares on Him because He cares for you. Matt. 28:20: Jesus says He is with us always. 1 Timothy 6:17: Putting my hope in God is more certain than anything on earth, and He will provide. (The verses are my paraphrase.)

May you find your hope in the Lord is my prayer.
